Hostile work environment
IntroductionTitle VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act prohibits sex discrimination within the workplace. In line with this, according to the Supreme Courtââ¬â¢s Decision in the Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson, cases of sexual harassment occur during instances wherein a form of sex discrimination occurs. Three primary elements must be specified in order to consider a particular act as a sexual assault: (1) the disputed behavior was gender-based; (2) the behavior was sufficiently severe or pervasive to create a hostile environment; and (3) the employer is liable for the behavior (Kleiman, Cass, & Samson, 2004, p. 54).It is important to note that there are two types of sexual harassment: quid pro quo and hostile environment. The difference between the two lies in the nature of the circumstance involved. In quid pro quo harassment, the employee is required by another individual to provide sexual favors in order to enable the continuance or growth of the career of the employee involved. Ho stile environment harassment, on the other hand, occurs during instances wherein another individualââ¬â¢s sexual behavior leads to the interference of an employeeââ¬â¢s work performance thereby leading to the creation of an intimidating and hostile environment. The above-mentioned distinction between the two forms of sexual harassment, are based upon the circumstance of the act involved, another distinction between the two, however, can be gleaned in relation to their effects to the individuals involved. In the former type of sexual harassment, the result of the act may be in favor to the individual involved. In the later form of sexual harassment, the act tends to impede the development of the individual involved as it leads to the creation of a hostile atmosphere within the workplace. It is important to note that the occurrence of sexual harassment within the workplace does not merely cause harm upon the individuals but it also causes harm upon the organization or institution in which such incidents occur. The Labor Department has noted that these incidents have led to the loss of millions of dollars from companies due to its ensuing effects amongst the other members of the workforce such as ââ¬Å"loss of productivity, absenteeism, and low employee turnoverâ⬠(Kleiman, Cass, & Samson, 2004, p. 54).Due to the widespread character of the incident, employers have placed into consideration the formulation of company guidelines and principles that enable the prevention of such incidents. The reasons for such actions, however, does not merely lie in the current statistical rise of information regarding the occurrence of such incidents but they also stem from the recognition that the implementation of such guidelines and principles minimizes the occurrence of low productivity resulting from incidents of sexual harassment. In lieu of this, this paper will discuss a scenario in which sexual harassment [of the hostile environment type] occurred. Such a discu ssion will pave the way for the elucidation of the conditions existing within cases of sexual harassment.ScenarioA male corporate sales supervisor (Frank) talks to a female sales associate (Mary) regarding an account within the company break room. During the conversation, Frank hinted that certain persuasive means were employed by Mary in order to get the account. At the end of the conversation, Frank implied that Mary is obliged to meet him for dinner so as not to lose the account. Mary refused and went to the Human Resource Office immediately.Analysis of the ScenarioIn the scenario mentioned above, when Mary walked away, Frank has already insinuated that Mary should give him some sexual favors before he will sign off the expense reports of Mary. While it may be argued that Frank did not explicitly ask for such sexual favors, such may implied from the facts that he approached Mary in a manner which made the distance between them seemed awkward, that he insisted on a dinner meeting beyond office hours, that he tacitly said that he will not sign the expense reports if Mary will not give in, and that he capped his approach with the words ââ¬Ëif you know what I mean'. Such meaningful verbal statements and unwelcome approaches can already constituted sexual harassment. It is not even necessary that the victim suffered any injury (Harris vs. Forklift).Furthermore, the fact that Frank is not the direct supervisor of Mary, hence, there is no ascendancy between them, is not material or relevant in considering his liability. In relation to the conduct between employees, Chapter XIV of the Federal Law states that an employer is accountable during instances wherein the employer [whether an agent or supervisor] takes no heed of a reported sexual harassment if it failed to take immediate and appropriate corrective action for the reported incident. This fact thereby renders moot and academic the question whether or not Frank abused his power, authority and trust as a sup ervisor.Considering the situation mentioned above, the recommended mode of action for Mary is as follows. If she believes that, the employer is well intentioned but unaware, a possible course of action to adhere to would be to utilize the grievance complaint filed in the office at court. The importance of doing such is partly due to the dependence of receiving recovery damages from submitting the aforementioned complaint. Thus, Mary should first comply with the grievance procedure established by her employer. In case there is no such grievance procedure or in case it fails to work, she may file a claim before any appropriate state agency. In case there is no such state agency, she may file her claim before the Federal agency, which is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). In the process of formulating complaints, it is necessary that any complaint she makes is documented so that they may be utilized in court during the trial period if such is the case that the complaint was not well addressed in the institution of her employment (Sexual Harassment Center, 1995). Furthermore, it is necessary that Mary consult an attorney that specializes on cases regarding sexual harassment. Conclusion and RecommendationsThe proliferation of sexual harassment cases within various institutions is a cause for alarm as far as it mirrors the manner in which certain forms of sex-based discrimination continually pervade within society. Furthermore, it also leads to the degradation of productivity within the workplace. In order to prevent such instances there is a need for organizations to create policies that are strict on incidents of sexual harassment. It has been proven, for example, that a zero-tolerance sexual harassment policy enabled the reduction of sexual harassment cases within a company (2001, p.6). Such programs may enable the encouragement of substantial punitive measures that enables employees to be fully aware of the nature of the offense. Furthermore, such programs should enable the institution of procedural rules and methods that ensures the safety of their employees in cases wherein harassment occurs. In relation to this, programs should be created that enable the dissemination of information regarding the above-mentioned policies. Such actions should be performed by organizations in order not merely top prevent incidents of sexual harassment but also in order to promote equality within the workplace. It should be recognized by companies and organizations that cases of sexual harassment does not merely occupy the social sphere but also the personal sphere thereby the importance of enabling programs that ensures its prevention ensures the development of discourses that opt for the development and furtherance of equality in both the private and public spheres.ReferencesGardner, S. & Johnson, P. Zirconium: Ore Crusher
Zirconiumà is aà chemical elementà with the symbolà Zr,à atomic numberà 40 and atomic mass of 91. 224. The name of zirconium is taken from the mineralà zircon, the most important source of zirconium. It is a lustrous, grey-white, strongà transition metalà that resemblesà titanium. Zirconium is mainly used as aà refractoryà andà opacifier, although minor amounts are used as alloying agent for its strong resistance to corrosion. Zirconium forms a variety ofà inorganicà andà organometallic compoundsà such asà zirconium dioxideà andà zirconocene dichloride, respectively.Fiveà isotopesà occur naturally, three of which are stable. Zirconium compounds have no known biological role. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- Characteristics Zirconium is aà lustrous, greyish-white, soft,à ductileà andà malleableà metal which is solid at room temperature, though it becomes hard andà brittleà at lower purities. In powder form, zirconium is highly flammable, but the solid form is far less prone to ignition. Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion by alkalis, acids, salt water and other agents. However, it will dissolve inà hydrochloricà andà sulfuric acid, especially whenà fluorineà is present. Alloys with zinc become magnetic below 35à K. Zirconium's melting point is 1855 à °C (3371 à °F), and its boiling point is 4371 à °C (7900 à °F). Zirconium has anà electronegativityà of 1. 33 on the Pauling scale. Of the elements withinà d-block, zirconium has the fourth lowest electronegativity afterà yttrium,à lutetiumà andà hafnium. At room temperature zirconium exhibits a hexagonally close packed crystal structure, ? -Zr, which changes to ? Zr a body-centered cubic crystal structure at 863 à °C. Zirconium exists in the ? -phase until the melting point. ZrZn2à is one of only two substances to exhibità superconductivityà andà ferromagnetismà simultaneously, with the other being UGe2. World production trend of zirconium mineral concentrates Zirconium has a concentration of about 130à mg/kg within theà Earth's crustà and about 0. 026à ? g/L inà sea water. It is not found in nature as aà native metal, reflecting its intrinsic instability with respect to water. The principal commercial source of zirconium is theà silicate mineral,à zirconà (ZrSiO4),which is found primarily in Australia, Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa and the United States, as well as in smaller deposits around the world. 80% of zircon mining occurs in Australia and South Africa. Zirconà resources exceed 60 million metric tons worldwideà and annual worldwide zirconium production is approximately 900,000 metric tons. Zirconium also occurs in more than 140 other minerals, including the commercially useful oresà baddeleyiteà andà kosnarite.Zr is relatively abundant inà S-type stars , and it has been detected in the sun and in meteorites. Lunar rock samples brought back from severalà Apollo programà missions to the moon have a quite high zirconium oxide content relative to terrestrial rocks. ââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬âââ¬â- zirconium ore processing flowsheet .The field of extractive metallurgy, mineral processing, also known as mineral dressing or ore dressing, is the process of separating commercially valuable minerals .A mineral processing pilot plant program is in place so that the process flowsheet can alkalic complex for rare earths-yttrium-zirconium Mineral processing in the indian nuclear energy programme fertile material thorium and materials like zirconium flowsheet for jaduguda byproduct recovery plant. Do people travel further to buy comparison goods rather than convenience goods?
My title asks, ââ¬Ëdo people travel further to buy comparison goods rather than convenience goods?' My data collection was carried out in the central business district (CBD) of St Albans. My general aim is to investigate a range of interests of shoppers in the area and also a little on the land use in the CBD. Once sufficient data is collected I will be manipulating it to answer my hypothesis and to draw a conclusion from the relevant results. St Albans was visited on a Market day, which is held in the main street of the city every Wednesday and Saturday. It was a suitable study area as it has many different aspects to it which would suit the needs for different types of data collection for many students with a large variety of hypothesises and questions. St Albans is located in Hertforshire, south-eastern England, on the River Ver, near its confluence with the Colne. St Albans is situated on the northern fringe of Greater London. The district includes the city and the parishes of Colney Heath, Harpenden Rural, Harpenden Town, London Colney, Redbourn, St. Michael, St. Stephen, Sandridge and Wheathampstead. (See figure 3). Nearby places outside the district include Hatfield to the east, Welwyn Garden City to the north-east, Luton and Dunstable to the north-west, Hemel Hempstead to the west, Watford to the south-west and Borehamwood to the south. (See figure 1 and figure 2). The population in mid-1998 was estimated at 131,400. (See figure 6). In the CBD of St Albans, our study included the roads, Market place (where the market is held), Chequer Street, Victoria Street, Peters Street, London Road, Holywell Hill, High Street, Verulam Road, Dagnall Street, Spencer Street, Catherine Street and Hatfield Road. (See figure 4 and figure 5). There are two main train stations. The city station is about 750m east of the city centre and is serviced by Thameslink. The abbey station is about 1km south of the city centre and is serviced by Silverlink. There is also a single train running between St Albans and Watford Junction, starting a new round trip every 45 minutes during most of the day. Housing is expensive relative to England in general, possibly due to the fast commuting to London by train. Notable buildings include St Albans Cathedral. The sphere of influence is the area served by a settlement, sometimes called a catchment area or hinterland. The larger the settlement, the greater the number and variety of shops and services and the wider the area from which people will travel to use the centre. London's sphere of influence is the whole country. Outside London towns such as Plymouth, Newcastle, Leeds and Norwich serve local regions. Market towns serve smaller villages and farms in the area. A village only serves itself and some surrounding farms. Smaller settlements tend to have fewer shops and services than larger settlements. The shops, such as a general store, newsagent, small supermarket and chemist tend to provide low-order or convenience goods such as newspapers, bread and milk. In larger settlements there are more shops and services. They include shops selling convenience goods but there are also department stores and specialist shops selling jewellery, sports equipment and furniture. These are called high-order or comparison goods. The types of goods and services in a settlement are linked to the following: ââ¬â The threshold population: the minimum number of people required to support a service so that it remains profitable. In the UK this is about 300 for a village shop, 500 for a primary school, 25000 for a shoe shop, 50000 for a medium sized store and 100000 for a large one. ââ¬â The range of a good: the maximum distance people are prepared to travel to use a shop or service. Most people do not travel great distances to buy a newspaper or do their shopping but they are prepared to travel further to purchase clothes, jewellery or furniture, which are more costly and bought less often. Method: On Wednesday 26th February 2003, geography students of Year 10 St. Helen's School visited St Albans on a market day in order to carry out some geography fieldwork for coursework. During the morning it was sunny and fairly warm, however, as the day went on, although it stayed sunny, it got colder. The CBD land use map (see figure 7) and the shopper's questionnaire (see figure 8) were carried out during the afternoon, when we were in the CBD. We were split into 11 groups of 4-5 people and were sent to one of the 11 sections of the CBD. By being split into groups and then spread to different areas all around the CBD, made data collection easier and quicker. My group and I were appointed to work in area 4, which included Chequer Street, Market Place and a small part of High Street. This area is in the heart of the CBD and was in an area where the market was being held. The CBD land use map was completed at about 14:30. My group and I walked around our area completing our land use map by filling in how each store along the streets was used. E.g. Fast food shop, shoe shop, newsagent etc. By doing this it showed us what proportion of stores were comparison and what proportion were convenience, were present in the CBD. This had to be pointed out as it could well effect whether people would travel further to buy either type of good. For example, if the CBD consisted almost completely of convenience stores, it may not be too likely that a lot of people would travel from very far to shop at the small range of comparison stores. There were a few problems with this method of data collection however. First of all, it was quite difficult to fill in every shop on the map. Some of the stores were hard to find or couldn't be found at all. Also, the map was a little too small to fill in enough detail. The shopper's questionnaire was carried out later on in the day. Each person in each group was advised to ask at least 5 different people who were seen in their particular area of the CBD. By asking the actual shoppers in St Albans, it allowed us to see their interests, whether they came to shop for comparison goods or convenience goods, how far they have travelled to buy what they wanted to buy, where bouts they have come from etc. Each question in the questionnaire had a different purpose, and some had some problems with them: ââ¬â ââ¬ËAre you shopping in St Albans?': this was the first question asked. If the answer was ââ¬Ëno' to this question, most of the other questions that followed would be completely irrelevant. ââ¬â ââ¬ËWere you held up in any traffic jam?': there was a problem with this question because, if the person being questioned travelled by foot it would not be a relevant. ââ¬â Some terms in the some of the questions were not understood by everybody. For example, ââ¬ËHave you come to use specialist services?', the term ââ¬Ëspecialist services' was not always understood and it had to be explained on many occasions. If the person being questioned was in a rush, they may not have had time to ask what the term meant, consequently giving an inaccurate answer which could effect the results. ââ¬â ââ¬ËWhere have you come from today to shop in St Albans?': this question may have caused problems as people were sometimes too vague with their answer because they may not have wanted us to know where they came from or maybe where they lived. E.g. If the person said that they came from London, it would have been too vague as from that, we do not know if they came from the CBD of London or the suburbs etc. Analysis and Interpretation: From studying the desire line maps (see figure 9 and figure 10) that I have drawn for both the distances people are prepared to travel for either comparison or convenience goods, it is fairly obvious that there are more people coming into St Albans from the south than from the north. This may be because of accessibility from these areas in the south and north to St Albans. I can see that there are better motorway links from the south than from the north. From the south there is the M1, A1, A41 etc. However from the north, although there are a few motorway links, it is more limited. Again from looking at the desire line maps, I can see that the results for comparison goods and convenience goods do not differ greatly at all. They both are drawn slightly north from Harpenden, and attracted greatly south-west by people travelling from Greater London. There are not so many people however travelling form the north-east or the south-west. Both desire line maps are very similar to each other, though there is one anomaly on the comparison goods map. This anomaly is the person who had travelled from Enfield which drew the sphere of influence further east. This, again, seems to be due to motorway links. A possible reason as to why the two desire line maps are so similar may be there is not a very large range of comparison goods in St Albans. From the CBD land use map, (see figure 12) even though it shows that there is a greater proportion of comparison stores than convenience stores, it may not mean that there is a large and wide variety of comparison stores. And at the same time, the market may have extended the distance people are willing to travel for convenience goods. Even though the market is of mainly convenience goods, people may still be prepared to travel from fairly far to shop in the market. This may be because people see that St Albans has a different atmosphere to any other market. For example, despite the fact that there is Watford Market in Watford, we can still see that quite a few people have travelled from Watford to shop and to use the market in St Albans. This may be because Watford Market differs greatly from the market in St Albans. Firstly, Watford Market is indoors. On the day we visited St Albans, the weather was very good, so that could have attracted more people. Watford Market is also only open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so because of this, people in Watford may have needed to buy something from a market even though the market in their area was closed. So, as the market in St. Albans is open on Wednesdays, and the day we visited the market was on a Wednesday, their may have been more people from Watford on that day, who wanted to use the market in St Albans. St Albans is also a fairly historical area, for example there are prestigious monuments such as St Albans Cathedral and the Clock Tower. This again could be another reason as to why people are attracted to the market in St Albans rather than a market in their own area or one nearer than the one St Albans. Conclusion: My title asked ââ¬Ëdo people travel further to buy comparison goods rather than convenience goods? From my results and interpretations I have been able to come to a conclusion to answer the question. I was able to see from my interpretations of the two desire line maps that the spheres of influences are of roughly the same shapes. The only factor that makes than a little different is the anomaly of the single person who had travelled from Enfield on that particular day. Also, all the reasons I have given as to why people may have travelled from particular places to buy either of the types of goods, even each other out. For example, the lack of variety of comparison stores lowers the distance people would be willing to travel for comparison goods, but at the same time the distance people would be willing to travel for convenience goods is being extended due to the unique market St Albans has. The results and interpretations don't particularly match text book predictions saying that people travel further to buy comparison goods than convenience goods. The ranges of the goods are very similar in this study and it shows that many factors can effect the distance people would be willing to travel to buy a particular good or to use a particular service. Therefore, one cannot always be grounded on the idea that comparison goods are always travelled further for than convenience goods are. To conclude, people do not travel further to buy comparison goods rather than convenience goods, but they travel about the same distances for either.

Morality in war Essay
Is war ever moral? I feel that War is a necessary part of life. Sometimes force is the only way to defend yourself or others. We are all equals, and It is immoral to take the life of anyone, but it is also immoral to let the life of anyone be taken. We have a responsibility to help each other because cooperation is the only way the human race can survive; we also have a right to defend ourselves. This means that if someone else is threatening you or anothers life, and you are capable of helping, you have an obligation to protect yourself or them. Lethal force will never be moral, but what if itââ¬â¢s the only way to protect someone? Letââ¬â¢s say that an attacker has broken into your house and is holding a gun to you and your family. You also have a gun pointed at the assailant. In this hypothetical situation we must assume that the only way to save your family is to kill the attacker. You must make a choice to kill the attacker or let the attacker kill you and your family. Both options are immoral, so one has to ask if itââ¬â¢s more immoral to kill the attacker, or to let the attacker kill your family? The obvious choice to me is to kill the assailant. I feel this is the right choice because of two reasons. One, our responsibility to protect ourselves and our family is larger than the responsibility to not do harm to another. The second reason has to do with the proportion of damage. The attacker would be doing more harm in killing my family and me then I would be doing in killing him. This example allows us to see, on a small scale, when lethal force is necessary. Things get more complicated when we look at entire countries rather than just one family, but my view point remains the same. Lethal force is only permitted when it is the only option to defend yourself or others. War is necessary because people sometimes make immoral decisions that put others in a position where there is no other option, but is war ever moral? Killing is always immoral, and killing is part of war, so parts of war are immoral, but does this mean war is inherently immoral? Sometimes it is the least immoral choice; this makes it the most moral choice, so it is sometime moral. I believe that many of the wars we have had have been immoral. I donââ¬â¢t think that the United States has been justified in itââ¬â¢s actions every time. ââ¬Å"It is alarming that military intervention in internal conflicts in foreign countries has become commonplace for the United States. â⬠ââ¬â Vladimir Putin. I feel that it is in part due to the classical ââ¬Å"maleâ⬠approach to ethics which focuses on ââ¬Å"independence, autonomy, intellect, will, wariness, hierarchy, domination, culture, transcendence, product, asceticism, war, and death,â⬠Jaggar, ââ¬Å"Feminist Ethics,â⬠1992 One can see that these characteristics would allow for war to be more often morally acceptable. A ââ¬Å"feministâ⬠approach to ethics would focus more on ââ¬Å"interdependence, community, connection, sharing, emotion, body, trust, absence of hierarchy, nature, immanence, process, joy, peace, and life. â⬠Jaggar, ââ¬Å"Feminist Ethics,â⬠1992 These characteristics allow for a more peaceful world. The Syrian regime was accused of using chemical weapons against itââ¬â¢s own people in september of 2013. The weapon of mass destruction ââ¬Å"Sarinâ⬠may have been used, and this action is against international law. The United states felt obligated to step in and punish the Syrian Government for this because they felt it was in the worlds best interest to not let these atrocities go unpunished. It could be more dangerous to let them get away with it because international law could fall apart and the world could turn to anarchy if nothing is done to punish wrong behavior. This being said, what is the best course of action to punish the Syrian government if they did infact use this weapon? Military action was debated, and President Obama was willing to attack if necessary, but I feel this is very dangerous. If the United States were to attack the Syrian government without UN approval It could have the same effect as doing nothing. This is because the united states would also be breaking international law, and this could also cause the UN to fall apart. If strong countries like the US bypass UN approval on military actions then International law means nothing. ââ¬Å"The world reacts by asking: if you cannot count on international law, then you must find other ways to ensure your security. Thus a growing number of countries seek to acquire weapons of mass destruction. This is logical: if you have the bomb, no one will touch you. â⬠-Vladimir Putin. In addition, military action would not be morally acceptable in this situation because it would not be in self defense; it would be an act of aggression causing more harm than good. A diplomatic approach would be a step in the right direction for this particular situation. This real life situation allows us to see how we can judge the morality of an action on a larger scale. In conclusion, war can be moral, but it is only a strategy to attain peace and safety for a group. All other options should be explored before war can be considered; this is because war involves some of the most immoral actions possible; the killing of others. ââ¬Å"Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime. â⬠- Ernest Hemingway http://www. brainyquote. com/quotes/quotes/e/ernesthemi108407. html#zB7XwPTRbCpbv7my. 99 http://www. nytimes. com/2013/09/12/opinion/putin-plea-for-caution-from-russia-on-syria. html? _r=0.

Assessing the Arguments Related to Shareholder Primacy and Stakeholder Dissertation
Assessing the Arguments Related to Shareholder Primacy and Stakeholder Theory in Corporate Governance - Dissertation Example Historically, the shareholder primacy theory has occupied a significant role in the corporate governance strategies based on the Anglo-American model. Shareholder primacy theory takes the position that the corporation is owned by shareholders and thus exists for the sole purpose of maximizing shareholder value. The role of shareholder primacy in corporate governance has been challenged by the European model of corporate governance which recognizes stakeholder value. Stakeholder theory looks more keenly at relationships between the corporation and its stakeholders, and presumes that profits flow naturally from improving stakeholder value and should not drive corporate decisions and behaviour. It therefore follows that theories of shareholder and stakeholder value espouse divergent presumptions on what factors should drive corporate behavior. In light of the recent global financial crisis of 2008-2009, there has been considerable debate over whether or not shareholder primacy should play an even greater role in making management accountable. Even so, these arguments are countered by arguments that express concern over the possibility that shareholder primacy would have a negative impact on the corporation or organizationââ¬â¢s wider class of stakeholders; employees, creditors, the community and consumers.... icism of Shareholder Primacy 24 2.3 Stakeholder Theory 28 2.3.1 Definition 28 2.3.2 Origins of Stakeholder Theory 30 2.3.3 Developments and Current Stakeholder Theory 32 2.3.4 Criticisms of Stakeholder Theory 34 2.4 Conclusion 36 2.5 Chapter Summary 37 Chapter Three 38 Shareholder Primacy in Corporate Governance 38 3.1 Introduction 38 3.2 Shareholder Primacy in Practice 38 3.3 Shareholder Primacy and Corporate Governance in the UK 42 3.4 Conclusion 46 3.5 Chapter Summary 47 Chapter Four 47 Stakeholder Theory and Corporate Governance 47 4.1 Introduction 48 4.2 Definition of Corporate Social Responsibility 48 4.3 Stakeholder Theory and Corporate Social Responsibility in Practice 49 4.4 Conclusion 54 4.5 Chapter Summary 54 Chapter Five 55 Findings/Conclusion 55 Bibliography 58 Chapter One Shareholder Primacy and Stakeholder Theory: Issues and Background 1.1 Introduction Historically, the shareholder primacy theory has occupied a significant role in the corporate governance strategies ba sed on the Anglo-American model.4 Shareholder primacy theory takes the position that the corporation is owned by shareholders and thus exists for the sole purpose of maximizing shareholder value.5 The role of shareholder primacy in corporate governance has been challenged by the European model of corporate governance which recognizes stakeholder value. Ethical Leadership and Decision Making Research Paper
Ethical Leadership and Decision Making - Research Paper Example Moreover, based on the accepted fact that success is not the final outcome of every attempt, it is the leader who ensures rescuing people from de-motivation rising from failure that most stands apart from the rest. The report herein develops an assessment of a leader that has served as a mentor to give meaning and understanding of effective leadership.à During work experience in the Army, Major General (Ret.) Charles McCartneyââ¬â¢s the leadership style influenced me greatly. McCartney well understood the privilege of leadership being responsibility with visionary collaboration and teamwork to gain an overall level of success. Thereby, this report develops an assessment on Major General (Ret.) Charles McCartneyââ¬â¢s various dimensions of leadership and will provide the review of the fact that successful leadership assumes all capabilities to lead its people to succeed as a combined goal. Management science has undertaken the considerable assessment of the leaders from vario us dimensions; for instance Behavioral factors, Transformational, Situational, Trait, Charisma along with the power and influence etc. Moreover, it is based on the early assumption that leaders are born and not made; however, contemporary theories assert that effective leader offers apart from direction to success also offer great learning opportunities (Browne & Keeley, 2012). These learning opportunities are presented as two types of leaders as mentioned below: (Northouse, 2007) Hence, leadership can be learned as well. In this, one can see that trait, skills and values from McCartneyââ¬â¢s style offer the reader a great chance to learn. The distinctive formats of the transformational or transactional leadership complimented with the power available to a given leader all work to facilitate the outcome from the leader. Broadly, leaders that are ultimately effective in leadership have to account for an optimum mix of three main factors (Barton, Grant, & Horn, 2012): Decision maki ng styles mix Day to day behavior Transformational and transactional leadership style It is worthy of mention, due to the fact that each dimension mentioned above has its own variation to offer and effective leaders formulate the mix of each dimensionââ¬â¢s offering suiting to the need of the situation and in the overall best interest of follower; though this may not be suiting to the need of the certain people. Hence, the effective leadership is also one to constantly learn and evolve from the challenges with the passion for success by adapting to the need for an hour.à For assessing Major General (Ret.) Charles McCartney with respect to his alignment with the leadershipââ¬â¢s dimension, the below roadmap will offer an effective guide in understanding such nuances: (Colquitt, Lepine, & Wesson, 2012)à à Decision Making Styles Leaderââ¬â¢s decisions ultimately decide the fate of the follower. Moreover, the fact that makes the decision making more crucial for the leade rs, especially in a critical situation where chances of loss equally exist, comes to even more prominence.à Ã

Discuss what you believe to be the purpose(s) of education today Essay - 2
Discuss what you believe to be the purpose(s) of education today - Essay Example This is actually an experience that brings formative effects on the manner in which an individual thinks and feels or whose acts may be taken to be educational. The research examines the significance that education often holds for an individual and society in the modern times. The educational process is very long, often being divided into stages that one has to undertake progressively; these stages include, the preschool, which is at the initial level, primary and then secondary, then later tertiary education which comprises of college and university as well as apprenticeship. The science that describes the bets and effective ways to teach is referred to as pedagogy. Because of the perceived importance of education, education has been ratified as an important human right, with governments enacting various legislations and means to ensuring that their citizens access quality education effectively. This has seen the introduction of free elementary education in some countries and even up to tertiary levels in others, all in a bid to ensure that the nation is effectively educated in order to influence social and economic development in the country Newman, the Catholic poet explains that in the learning process, especially at the higher level, the university, learners get the essence of learning. He says, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦The university is a society in which the student absorbs the graces and accomplishments of a higher form of lifeâ⬠(Newman para 2). It is believed that long before any formalized research existed; state constitution and all forms of legislative requirements, philosophers of the ancient times had already shown great regard to the purpose of education and the process of schooling in general (Newman para 6). They seemed to encourage people to think and identify the true meaning of life, and training their children on this path in order to become responsible
